Cradock: SCHREINER KAROO WRITERS FESTIVAL
The 6th annual festival features a warming mix of stories, talks, history, theatre, poetry, video, new books, readings, exhibitions, walks, tours, and fireside chats. A perfect excuse to indulge in warm Karoo hospitality, feast on farm food and commune with like-minded spirits!
Kuier with remarkable people – like Etienne van Heerden and Coenie de Villiers (they will screen and discuss their recent Karoo documentary ‘Toorwoorde’). Or Dr Pamela Matseko – co-editor and translator with Jeff Opland of WW GQoba’s Xhosa histories and poetry (1873-1888)
There’s a special focus on Matjiesfontein’s history and lots of fresh insight into the life and work of Olive Schreiner with specialists joining us from Australia (professors Dorothy Driver and Tony Voss) and Scotland (Dr Clare Gill). Visit the Schreiner sarcophagus atop Buffelskop; join the Literary Walking Tour of Old Cradock, the tour of Lingelihle township (‘In the Footsteps of James Calata and Matthew Goniwe’) and/or ‘Stories in Stone’ – a tour of Cradock’s architectural gems. Our slide show of Victorian photographs of Cradock (by WW Lidbetter) is a fascinating companion piece to this.

Marvel at the star-studded Karoo night sky, then relax with a kelkie and a choice of evening entertainment – a special staging of Tony Jackman’s new history play ‘Cape of Rebels’; an armchair tour of our beloved region with the Karoo Keepsakes team, or an evening with Herman Charles Bosman’s Oom Schalk (presented by David Muller).
Shop at a pop-up Clarke’s Bookshop (all the way from Cape Town); a second-hand book table and a mini artisan market.
